How many random tests do I owe?
Type your average number of CDL drivers. You'll see the 2026 minimum random drug and alcohol tests for your own pool, how to spread them, and what they'd cost at Pact's prices.
Want your whole year, from your USDOT number? The DOT Fleet Compliance Snapshot reads your company from FMCSA's census and adds your quarterly testing calendar, your MCS-150 update month, Clearinghouse queries and what an auditor asks for, emailed to you.
Rates: FMCSA's 2026 minimums, 50% drug and 10% alcohol, based on the average number of driver positions (DOT ODAPC; 49 CFR 382.305). Rounded up. In a consortium the rate applies to the whole pool, so your own count can differ in a given year. Pre-employment, post-accident and reasonable-suspicion tests are on top.
Common questions
How many random drug tests does a trucking company need in 2026?
At least 50% of the average number of driver positions for drug tests and 10% for alcohol tests. FMCSA kept both rates the same as 2025.
What is the "average number of driver positions"?
Add up the number of CDL drivers in your pool at each selection, then divide by the number of selections. A company that grows during the year uses the average, not the year-end count.
Does a small company in a consortium have to test half its drivers?
No. In a consortium the rates apply to the whole pool. Each driver has an equal chance at every draw, so in a given year your drivers may be picked more or less than half the time.
Can I test everyone at the end of the year?
No. Selections and tests must be spread reasonably through the year, and each driver must have an equal chance of being picked at every selection.
