How Long Is a Pre-Employment Drug Test Good For?

For non-DOT tests, the employer or program decides how long a drug test result stays good. We haven't found a federal rule that sets a shelf life for non-DOT results, and published windows vary widely: one nursing program accepts a screen for two years, while one hospital checklist wants it within 12 months. DOT-regulated drivers follow a federal rule instead. Either way, ask the employer or program before you test, and test close to the deadline they give you.

Who decides

A non-DOT drug test is any test DOT rules don't require. The employer or program sets its terms, including which drugs are tested, who must receive the result, and how old a result can be. State law can add rules for employers in some states.

So the honest answer to "how long is it good for?" is: as long as the employer or program says. Ask them, and get the answer in writing if you can.

Real examples of validity windows

DOT drivers: a different rule

For truck and bus drivers covered by FMCSA rules, 49 CFR 382.301(a) says a driver must be tested before the first time they perform safety-sensitive functions for an employer. The employer can't let the driver perform those functions until it has a verified negative result from the MRO or consortium.

There is a narrow exception in 382.301(b). An employer doesn't have to test if the driver took part in a qualifying DOT testing program within the previous 30 days, and either was tested within the past 6 months or was in a random testing program for the previous 12 months, and no known prior employer has a violation record in the past six months. The employer must contact the program and keep records to use it.

Pact's $40 online test is a non-DOT test. It can't be used for a DOT pre-employment test. See our guide to the DOT pre-employment drug test.

Why old results tell an employer little

Quest Diagnostics says urine drug testing typically detects recent drug use in the previous 24 to 72 hours. A result describes the days before the collection, not the months after it. That is one reason employers and programs set their own windows instead of accepting any past test.

How soon after a job offer is the drug test?

We haven't found a federal timeline for non-DOT tests. The employer sets the deadline, so follow the instructions you get and ask if anything is unclear.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a test to determine the illegal use of drugs is not considered a medical examination (42 U.S.C. 12114(d)(1)). That means the ADA's rules on when employers may require medical exams don't apply to the drug test itself. State or local law may still add rules, and this isn't legal advice.

How to time your test

Can I reuse a test I already took?

Only if the new employer or program agrees. Ask whether it accepts an earlier result, how old it can be, which drugs it must include, and how the result must reach them. A result sent to one employer isn't automatically shared with another.

With a Pact order, the result goes to the person tested and to the employer or program named at checkout.

Ordering Pact's 10-panel

If your employer or program accepts a result from any lab, Pact's non-DOT 10-panel is $40. It covers the urine collection at a Quest Diagnostics patient service center, the lab test and MRO review. Name the employer or program at checkout so the result goes to them. Testing in New York, New Jersey or Rhode Island? Call Pact before you order. All sales are final.

Common questions

How long is a pre-employment drug test valid?

For non-DOT tests, as long as the employer or program says. Published examples range from 12 months (UNC Health's advanced practice student checklist) to two years (Rutgers School of Nursing).

Is there a federal rule on how long a drug test is good for?

Not that we've found for non-DOT tests. DOT-regulated drivers follow 49 CFR 382.301, which requires a test before first performing safety-sensitive functions, with a narrow exception.

How long does a urine test detect drugs?

Quest says urine drug testing typically detects recent drug use in the previous 24 to 72 hours.

Can a drug test be done before a job offer?

Under the ADA, a test for illegal drug use is not a medical examination (42 U.S.C. 12114(d)(1)), so the ADA's medical-exam timing rules don't apply to it. State or local laws may differ.

Can I use my Pact test for a second employer?

Only if that employer accepts it. Ask before you order a new one, and ask how the result must reach them.
