How Long Does a Background Check Take for a Job?

It depends on which searches the check includes. Checkr says employment background checks through a background check company typically take three to five days on average. Database searches can come back in minutes. County court searches can take anywhere from less than a day to 10 business days or more. Nobody can promise an exact time, but knowing what slows a check down helps you keep yours moving.

The clock starts after consent

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an employer must give a written disclosure and get the person's written authorization before getting a background report for a job (15 U.S.C. 1681b(b)(2)).

With a Pact order, Checkr emails the person being checked a secure link. They enter their legal name, date of birth, Social Security number and address history, then sign the disclosure and authorization. Nothing runs before they consent. Checkr notes that a candidate who is slow to respond may delay the check.

Orders are taken now and start when Pact's Checkr account opens; Checkr then emails the person.

Database searches are usually fast

Checkr says database searches, such as national criminal record checks and sex offender registry checks, may return results in minutes. It says its national criminal search usually takes only a few seconds.

Pact's Standard check ($32) is four database searches: an SSN trace, a national criminal search, a sex offender registry search and a global watchlist search.

County court searches take longer

Pact's Premium check ($70) adds a county criminal search covering the last 7 years, plus a FACIS Level 3 healthcare sanctions search.

Checkr says each of the nearly 3,200 U.S. counties keeps its own criminal records, and most felony and misdemeanor cases are filed in county courts. Some courts have records online or on public access terminals at the courthouse. Courts that keep paper records rely on a county clerk, and getting copies usually means a trip to the courthouse. Checkr puts the range for a county search at less than a day to 10 business days or more.

A national search can also lead to county searches. Checkr says that if its national search turns up a possible record, it expands the search to those counties, and the check then often takes one to five days, sometimes longer.

County court fees

Some county courts charge a fee to search their records. If a search you order from Pact hits one, Pact will tell you before adding it.

Common questions

How long does a background check take for a job?

Checkr says employment background checks through a background check company typically take three to five days on average. Database-only checks can be much faster, and county searches can take 10 business days or more.

Why is my background check taking so long?

The usual reasons are county courts that need manual retrieval, paper records, searches in several counties, extra work to confirm a record belongs to you, or missing information from the person being checked.

Does a slow background check mean something was found?

Not necessarily. Court access, paper records and identity matching can all add time even when nothing is reported.

How can I check the status?

Checkr says its candidate portal gives an estimated completion time and status updates. Use the link in your Checkr email.

What should I have ready before I start?

Your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number and address history, plus any other names you have used, such as a maiden name. Entering these correctly the first time helps avoid mismatches and delays.

Which Pact package is faster?

Standard is four database searches, which are usually fast. Premium adds a county criminal search and FACIS Level 3, so it can take longer when a county court is slow.
